At 23, Rafael J. Hernández was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a bone cancer that typically affects children and teenagers and is rare in adults. His doctor put the odds of an adult getting it at one in a million. Twenty years later, marking two decades since that diagnosis, he is self-publishing Joshy-Boy and the Best Club You Never Want to Be a Part Of, an emotionally honest picture book for children facing serious illness, illustrated by his cousin Josy in a family collaboration spanning the United States and Colombia. He has mentored cancer survivors since 2010, and he wrote the book he would have needed as the child this disease usually finds.
